JARROD'S SUMMER CAMP WRAP UP Throughout January and February, I ran a couple of fathers and sons camps. Always so much fun, these camps are intended to make space for Dads and their boys to hang out, make fire, cook, have some laughs, connect with nature, and enjoy some adventures. The January camp started off really well until the Saturday night when unforecasted torrential rain moved in just after midnight. Our tents did an admirable job as the rain hammered down, and I kept a close eye on the rising stream until daylight did its best to announce a new day. We hike the 1km track into the camp so I got up as soon as it was light and walked back to collect the Polaris. The next couple of hours were spent absolutely soaked, ferrying all the now drowned campers out of the mess to our house for some very welcome hot coffee, a cooked breakfast, and dry! Our February camp was unfortunately (again) weather affected with rain forecast and arriving as predicted. We made the call to forego the tents this time and set ourselves up at our Knights View accommodation. Suffice to say this is not really camping, but we still made fire, hiked through the ngahere , swam in the river, and did all the usual things. The crew on this one were right into archery too, so learning to stalk a goat in the wild was an added dynamic and a first. The goats were safe this time round. These camps are about connecting with other Dads and enjoying their company, while the boys form a pack and test what the next “fun” thing might be.
