I’m in the Hawks Bay for work today, needed to stretch me legs so wondered up Te Mata peak.
The views aren’t too bad but looking down I was surprised to see scallop and oyster and all sorts of other shells everywhere, the ground is literally made from millennia old sea creatures. Pretty cool, strange but cool!

My life, probably like yours, is a constant tight rope balancing business stress, family needs, life stuff and replenishment.
What cup filling looks like for me; places away from anything with a face, a slow place void of pressure or worry. Sometimes cold, often surprising, where treasure and meaning can be found in equal measure.
And when the sun rises again to breath life into a new day, somehow all of those things sing just a little bit louder.

I haven’t had much time lately to get outside with camera in hand, there’s a bit going but all well worth the effort.
Not to worry, these were all taken on my phone, which is more camera than phone these days anyway.. Gotta love an epic sunset/sunrise , oh and kid in tub.

“Made by waves”

Orewa beach New Zealand, January 2024

There is a sea wall made from large rocks at the Northern end of the beach doing their best to keep the sea from consuming the land.
Each time there is a decent storm and a high tide they are pounded by the waves which deposit debris amongst the gaps and crevices.
Some time later this guy shows up and struggles to squeeze his camera into those spaces...
These are the result 🌊

I’ve managed to get outside a bit with camera in hand which is good for body, mind and sole.
Creativity seems to be a spot on antidote for poor mental health, and being in nature can’t hurt either.
Works for me …… these are a few from recent wondering and noticing’s 👌

Ez and I headed out with @thepetrelstation yesterday for 10 hours of amazing sea bird fun!
Ezra was their youngest ever trip participant and was fizzing all day. Of course he talked the ear of everyone on the boat, asked a zillion questions, took photos and sat at the helm on the return voyage. We saw 29 different sea bird species, and 4 different Albatross species.
I took some photos too, of course...
An awesome day on the water without a single fish (or bird) harmed!

I love the NZ bush. The more time I spend exploring, listening and noticing the more amazement I have for nature’s ability thrive regardless of past destruction. This entire place was logged and burned to make way for cows but patches (steep mostly inaccessible spots) were left to regenerate through the middle of this century. Unfortunately in recent decades cows grazed most of the under story until we bought the property and retired all grazing. The regeneration over the past couple of years has been remarkable, but we’re not done yet!

That’s the @whaka100_official Miler knocked off, 160kms and 4000m vertical of some of the best mountain biking in NZ.
Big thanks to @gmc_cycling_ bike was flawless all day, same can’t be said for the rider 😏 that was as quite possibly the toughest thing I’ve ever done 🥵
11 hours on the dot for 19th overall 🤙

Managed to line up with a number on my bike again yesterday after 3 years of being told “you’re not welcome”.
Turns out I still love racing, and mud, which is fortunate as there was plenty of both!

I went for a walk with the intention of just walking. Unfortunately Apple have a product that many of us carry around 24/7 and yeah I’m no different.

I managed to spend 5 magical days lost in the central north island back country with too good bastards and a dog.
I actually took my camera, touched it not once so whipped out the trusty old hand apple for a few shots.

It was cold, wet, wild and windy, I loved it.

Introduced from Western Europe in the very early stages of European settlement, it was recorded by Charles Darwin during his voyage through New Zealand waters in 1835 as growing in hedges in the Bay of Islands. Its spread and development as a weed in New Zealand's temperate climate was rapid, but settlers failed to recognise the threat; gorse seed continued to be imported and plantings deliberately established into the 1900s.

It is now a major invasive plant species with millions of dollars spent on its control.

The process goes something like this: Get up stupid early, wake up dog, tell dog to be quiet 30-40 times, grab camera and gear and wonder off in which ever direction feels right for the morning.
Then it's look, feel, shoot, repeat. That goes on for as long as I think I can get away with it (kids will be up and about by now) before heading home.
If I don't get lost (don't worry, it doesn't happen often) I'll be back before 9 ready for coffee.

Editing happens anytime after dark during the week and sometimes I'll share something I like here on IG.
Not many people will see these images but thats not the point, I just love being outside creating something, even if I have to shoo the dog out of frame multiple times on any given morning!!

The process goes something like this: Get up stupid early, wake up dog, tell dog to be quiet 30-40 times, grab camera and gear and wonder off in which ever direction feels right for the morning.
Then it's look, feel, shoot, repeat. That goes on for as long as I think I can get away with it (kids will be up and about by now) before heading home.
If I don't get lost (don't worry, it doesn't happen often) I'll be back before 9 ready for coffee.

Editing happens anytime after dark during the week and sometimes I'll share something I like here on IG.
Not many people will see these images but thats not the point, I just love being outside creating something, even if I have to shoo the dog out of frame multiple times on any given morning!!
